Rent or Buy Wireless Mics and Projectors for a School Show?

Updated October 2026

Short answer: rent when you need gear for one production a year, want extra channels for one big show, or want to try projection before committing. Buy when you mic more than one show a year, run concerts and events on the same gear, or are tired of re-training a crew on borrowed equipment every spring. Many schools do both: they own 8 or 16 channels and rent the extra channels or a projector for the big musical.

Rent or buy: a quick comparison

Rent for a production Buy and own
Best for One show a year; extra channels for a big cast; trying projection Two or more productions a year, plus concerts and events
How it works Weekly, Monday to Monday, booked through Broadway Media Show-Ready racks built, programmed and tested, shipped in 2–4 weeks
What arrives Transmitters and mics for every channel, in fitted cases with return labels A rack your crew keeps, learns and grows with add-on racks
Paying School POs accepted School POs, formal quotes, tax-exempt orders, net terms for approved accounts
Care Damage waiver or your own insurance certificate 1-year warranty, then ShowCare plans and flat-rate repairs

Five questions that decide it

  1. How many weeks a year will you use it? Count every production, concert, assembly and graduation. Rent is priced per week; ownership pays off as the weeks add up. Ask us for both a rental and a purchase quote and compare them over three to five years.
  2. Is your channel count stable? If every show needs about the same number of mics, own that number. If one show a year needs many more, own the base and rent the extra channels for that show.
  3. Who runs it? A student crew that uses the same rack all year gets faster and more confident. Rented gear is tested and labeled, but the crew learns it again each time.
  4. Where does the money come from? A one-time capital or booster purchase suits buying. A per-production budget line suits renting.
  5. Is this a trial? Projection especially: rent an ultra-short-throw projector for one show, see how your director uses it, then buy with confidence.

Wireless microphones

Rental wireless systems range from an 8-channel plug-and-play Creative Audio rack for small casts, to Shure SLX-D digital systems in 8 to 24 channels for most schools, to a 16-channel Lectrosonics system for the most demanding shows. See the rental systems.

To own one, start with our Show-Ready wireless systems: 8-channel racks on Creative Audio, Shure or Sennheiser that combine into 16 or 24 channels. Add a rack later and we coordinate it with the racks you already own. Not sure how many channels you need? Use the channel-count worksheet.

Already own a system? You may only need mics: Bodymics theatre mics are wired for the transmitters you have.

Projectors and digital scenery

Rental stage projectors use ultra-short-throw lenses, so a bright, large image lands on your screen or backdrop from a few feet away with fewer actor shadows. Mount and cabling are included. See rental projectors.

To buy, compare stage projection systems or start with how to choose a stage projector for digital scenery. Owning makes sense when projection becomes part of every season, not a one-off effect.

Common questions

Can a school rent wireless microphones for one musical?

Yes. Stage Gear's rental fleet is booked through Broadway Media, our rental partner, in Monday-to-Monday weeks timed to tech week. Wireless systems come with a transmitter and microphone for every channel, tested and packed in fitted cases with return labels.

Can we rent a projector for scenic projections?

Yes. Ultra-short-throw stage projectors rent by the week with the mount and cabling included, so a school can try digital scenery for one show before buying a projector.

Can we rent first and buy later?

Yes. The Standard rental wireless system uses the same Shure SLX-D build as our Shure Show-Ready rack, so your crew learns the system you would own.

How far ahead should we order if we buy?

Show-Ready wireless systems ship 2 to 4 weeks after the order is confirmed, because each rack is built, programmed and tested. If your purchase order needs district approval, request a quote early and work back from tech week.
