Wireless Mics and Projection for Anastasia: The Musical

Show guide · Full-length · 10 named roles plus an expandable ensemble · Reviewed by Stage Gear staff, October 2026

Short answer: plan on 12 channels. Ten body mics for the principals and featured roles plus 2 spares. Cover the ensemble with 2–3 area mics at the stage edge, and add a mic offstage for the hidden chorus.

Stage Gear supplies wireless mics, rentals and projection to school and community theatres across the U.S. Our staff work in theatre; this guide is how we'd mic Anastasia: The Musical.

Who gets a mic

We counted the six principals (Anya, Dmitry, Vlad, Gleb, the Dowager Empress and Lily) plus Young Anastasia, who sings in the prologue, Count Ipolitov, who leads "Stay, I Pray You," Tsar Nicholas II and Count Leopold. That is 10 body mics plus 2 spares, for 12 channels. "In My Dreams" uses an offstage female chorus; put a wired or handheld mic in the wings for them instead of using body packs.

Borderline roles: the Tsarina, Marfa, Paulina and Gorlinsky have short featured moments that area mics or a spare can usually cover. Tsar Nicholas appears mostly in the Romanov scenes and Count Leopold in Paris, so they may be able to share a pack if your blocking keeps them from ever being on stage together. Check every scene before you commit, and budget time for the pack swap.

Bigger budget: add packs for the Tsarina, Marfa, Paulina and Gorlinsky for about 16 channels. For a middle school or a 60-minute slot, Concord also licenses Anastasia: The Musical (Youth Edition), which needs fewer channels.

The ensemble

The ensemble plays the Romanov court, St. Petersburg crowds, Paris exiles and the Neva Club. Cover them with 2–3 area or choir mics along the stage edge, and bring big group numbers such as "A Rumor in St. Petersburg" and "Paris Holds the Key" downstage when you can. If an ensemble member has a featured line over music, hand them a spare body mic for that scene rather than adding a channel.

Show notes from our team

  • "Quartet at the Ballet". Anya, Dmitry, the Dowager Empress and Gleb sing at the same time from different spots in the theatre. Mark all four faders, rehearse the mix early, and keep the ballet music under the voices.
  • Wigs, hats and gowns. Anya, Lily and the Dowager Empress change wigs, hats and gowns often. Fit hairline mics at the first wig fitting and run cables so dressers can change costumes without unclipping packs.
  • Offstage chorus in "In My Dreams". The hidden female chorus is easiest on one or two wired or handheld mics in the wings. Set their level once in tech and label the channel clearly.
  • The train journey. The train sequence is busy, with movement, effects and several principals talking over music. Keep sound effects lower than you think, and tape mic cables firmly for the jump and the chase.

Projection

Anastasia moves from the St. Petersburg palace and city streets to a train journey across Europe and on to Paris and the ballet, so projected scenery suits almost every scene. Most school auditoriums need 7,000–10,000 lumens with the right lens; smaller black boxes need less.

Our sister company Broadway Media makes Scenic Projections for Anastasia: The Musical. Not sure which projector? Read Stage Projectors for Digital Scenery.

Common questions

How many wireless mics does Anastasia need?
Plan on 12 channels: body mics for Anya, Dmitry, Vlad, Gleb, the Dowager Empress, Lily, Young Anastasia, Count Ipolitov, Tsar Nicholas and Count Leopold, plus 2 spares. Cover the ensemble with area mics.
How do we mic the Anastasia ensemble?
Use 2–3 area or choir mics along the stage edge for the court, crowd and Paris scenes. Stage big group numbers downstage, and use a wired mic in the wings for the offstage chorus.
Is there a shorter version of Anastasia for younger casts?
Yes. Concord Theatricals also licenses Anastasia: The Musical (Youth Edition), a 60-minute version for young performers. It has fewer solo moments, so most groups need fewer channels than the full-length show.
Can we rent mics just for our show week?
Yes. Stage Gear rentals run Monday to Monday around tech week, so you have mics for rehearsals and every performance. Systems arrive tested with return labels, and school purchase orders are welcome.
