Who gets a mic

We counted roles that sing solos or carry lines over music: Albert, Rosie, Conrad, Kim, Mr. MacAfee, Mrs. MacAfee, Mae Peterson, Hugo, Randolph, Ursula and Gloria Rasputin, plus Margie, Deborah Sue and Harvey Johnson, who sing featured lines in "The Telephone Hour" and "Wounded." That is 14 body mics plus 2 spares, for 16 channels.

Borderline: Mae Peterson, Gloria and Randolph. Mae doesn't have a solo, but her comic scenes often play over underscoring. On a 12-channel budget, drop the three featured teens and cover them with area mics. Ed Sullivan is an offstage voice, so use a wired or handheld mic in the wings. Many productions give Conrad a period stand mic or handheld as a prop for "Honestly Sincere"; a live handheld can replace his body mic for that number.

Bigger budget: add more Telephone Hour teens (Alice, Helen, Nancy, Penelope) and the Mayor for about 20 channels.

The ensemble

The teen chorus drives "The Telephone Hour" and "A Lot of Livin' to Do," and the Sweet Apple adults join for "Kids." Cover them with 3 area mics along the stage edge. Concord's score puts teen girls singing in the pit for the overture, entr'acte and ballet, so add one choir mic there. A teen with a solo line can borrow a spare.

Show notes from our team

  • "The Telephone Hour". Teens sing short lines from all over a multi-level phone set. Mic featured callers, put area mics where the most teens stand, and keep their faders up only for this number.
  • Singers in the pit. Concord's score has teen girls singing in the pit during the overture, entr'acte and ballet. Place a choir mic there and balance it against the orchestra.
  • Shriner Ballet. Rosie dances with a room of Shriners, often under and on a table. Use a headset and mic belt, and check her pack right after the scene.
  • Ed Sullivan scene. Ed Sullivan is an offstage voice, and the family sings to him. Put him on a wired mic in the wings and cue it with the MacAfees' mics.

Projection

The Almaelou office, the MacAfee home, Maude's bar, the ice house and the Sweet Apple train station all suit projected scenery, and the Ed Sullivan scene can use a projected TV broadcast. Most school auditoriums need 7,000–10,000 lumens with the right lens; smaller black boxes need less.

Common questions

How many wireless mics does Bye Bye Birdie need?
Plan on 16 channels: body mics for Albert, Rosie, Conrad, Kim, both MacAfees, Mae, Hugo, Randolph, Ursula, Gloria, Margie, Deborah Sue and Harvey Johnson, plus 2 spares. On 12 channels, put the featured teens on area mics.
How do we mic "The Telephone Hour" in Bye Bye Birdie?
Give body mics to the featured callers and cover the rest of the teens with 3 area mics aimed at the busiest parts of the phone set. Turn those area mics up only for this number.
Should Conrad Birdie use a handheld mic?
He can. A period stand mic or handheld fits a 1950s rock star, and a live one sounds great in "Honestly Sincere." Keep his body mic on for dialogue, and mute it while he sings into the handheld.
Can we rent mics just for our show week?
Yes. Stage Gear rentals run Monday to Monday around tech week, so you have mics for rehearsals and every performance. Systems arrive tested with return labels, and school purchase orders are welcome.
