Who gets a mic

We counted the roles MTI lists as singing leads or featured speakers: Buddy, Santa, Jovie, Walter, Emily and Michael Hobbs, the Manager, Deb, Charlie, Charlotte Dennon and Sarah. Mr. Greenway and Fake Santa never appear in the same scene, so if your blocking leaves time for a clean swap they can share one pack. That is 12 body mics plus 2 spares, for 14 channels.

Borderline roles: Shawanda, Sam, the security guards, the policemen, Chadwick and Matthews, Darlene and Emma, and the Saleswoman have short scenes that area mics can usually handle if you stage them downstage. Sarah and Charlotte Dennon are the first to drop on a 12-channel budget; check your script for how much they speak over music.

Bigger budget: give Fake Santa and Mr. Greenway separate packs and add Shawanda and Sam, for about 17 channels. For the four finale soloists, a handheld on a stand or the spares are simpler than four extra channels.

The ensemble

Elves, New Yorkers, Macy's employees, carolers and the Central Park crowd sing as groups. Cover them with 3–4 area or choir mics along the stage edge and bring the singing elves downstage in "Happy All the Time" and "Sparklejollytwinklejingley." The four finale soloists can share a handheld on a stand or the spare body mics; a featured ensemble member gets a channel only if they sing a solo away from the stage edge.

Show notes from our team

  • Santa's beard. Beards rub and rustle against an earset boom. Mount a hairline element above the beard and under the Santa hat for both Santa and Fake Santa, and fit it at the first beard fitting.
  • Elf hats and ears. Elf hats and prosthetic ears sit right where a mic goes. Tape the element at the hairline before the hat goes on, and keep the cable away from jingle bells that can tap the mic.
  • "Sparklejollytwinklejingley". This Macy's number has Buddy, the Manager and the elves moving fast. Use mic belts, tape cables at the neck, and check Buddy's mic right after the number.
  • The finale and Santa's sleigh. Four finale soloists, the full company and a flying-sleigh moment land together. Pre-set the soloists' handheld or spares, and run sleigh bells and flying effects as sound cues so they do not mask the singing.

Projection

The North Pole workshop, Walter's office in the Empire State Building, Macy's, Central Park and Santa's sleigh flight all suit projected scenery, and projection makes the jump from the North Pole to New York quick. Most school auditoriums need 7,000–10,000 lumens with the right lens; smaller black boxes and cafetoriums need less.

Our sister company Broadway Media makes Scenic Projections for Elf The Musical JR. Not sure which projector? Read Stage Projectors for Digital Scenery.

Common questions

How many wireless mics does Elf JR. need?
Plan on 14 channels: 12 body mics for Buddy, Santa, Jovie, the Hobbs family, the Manager, Deb, Charlie and featured speakers, plus 2 spares. Cover the elves and New Yorkers with 3–4 area mics.
Do the elves need body mics in Elf JR.?
Usually not. The elves sing as a group, so 3–4 area or choir mics at the stage edge cover them. Give Charlie a body mic because he leads the elves and speaks over the music.
How do you mic Santa with a beard?
Use a hairline mic above the beard, hidden under the Santa hat. An earset boom rubs against the beard and picks up noise. Fit it at the first beard and costume fitting.
Can we rent mics just for our show week?
Yes. Stage Gear rentals run Monday to Monday around tech week, so you have mics for rehearsals and every performance. Systems arrive tested with return labels, and school purchase orders are welcome.
