Wireless Mics and Projection for Disney's Frozen JR.

Show guide · JR. · 17 roles plus a large ensemble · Reviewed by Stage Gear staff, October 2026

Short answer: plan on 16 channels. 14 body mics for the main roles, with King Agnarr and Oaken sharing one, plus 2 spares. Many middle-school productions manage on 12–14 by sharing more packs between roles that never overlap.

Stage Gear supplies wireless mics, rentals and projection to school and community theatres across the U.S. Our staff work in theatre; this guide is how we'd mic Disney's Frozen JR.

Who gets a mic

We counted roles that sing solos or carry dialogue over music: Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Hans, Olaf, Sven, Weselton, Pabbie, Bulda, Young Anna, Young Elsa, Middle Anna, King Agnarr and Queen Iduna. King Agnarr and Oaken can share one pack, because the King leaves the story before the coronation and Oaken does not appear until the mountain. That gives 14 packs plus 2 spares, for 16 channels.

Borderline: Middle Elsa has a single sung line and the Bishop has a few lines at the coronation; both can work on an area mic or a spare. Many JR. productions run 12–14 channels by moving the young sisters' and Queen's packs to Weselton and the Bishop, but those swaps happen within a song or two, so only try them with a confident backstage mic wrangler.

Bigger budget (18 channels): give Middle Elsa and the Bishop their own packs so no one is waiting on a swap.

The ensemble

Townspeople, the Snow Chorus, the Hidden Folk and Oaken's Family sing as groups, so cover them with two or three area or choir mics at the stage edge. Give an ensemble member a body channel only for a featured solo line that must cut through, for example in "Fixer Upper" or "Hygge."

Show notes from our team

  • Three Annas, three Elsas. Young, Middle and adult Anna hand off within "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" Build scenes or mute groups for each age so only the singing sister's mic is open.
  • "Let It Go" costume reveal. Elsa's onstage reveal is the moment most likely to snag a cable. Run the cable down the back, outside the tear-away layer, and rehearse the reveal with the mic on.
  • Olaf and Sven costumes. Olaf's headpiece or puppet and Sven's antlers sit right where mics go. Fit mics during the first costume fitting, not at tech, and check that nothing rubs.
  • Coronation ball crowd. Anna, Elsa, Hans and Weselton trade lines while the Townspeople fill the stage. Keep ensemble area mics low here so principal dialogue stays on top.

Projection

Arendelle, the castle gates, the frozen fjord, the mountain and Elsa's ice palace all suit projected scenery, and the winter spreading over the kingdom is a strong projection moment. Most school auditoriums need 7,000–10,000 lumens with the right lens; black boxes and cafetoriums can use less.

Our sister company Broadway Media makes Scenic Projections for Disney's Frozen JR. Not sure which projector? Read Stage Projectors for Digital Scenery.

Common questions

How many wireless mics does Frozen JR. need?
Plan on 16 channels: 14 body mics for the main roles, with King Agnarr and Oaken sharing one, plus 2 spares. Many middle-school productions manage on 12–14 by sharing more packs between roles that never overlap.
How do we mic the Snow Chorus and ensemble in Frozen JR.?
Use two or three area or choir mics along the front of the stage for the Snow Chorus, Townspeople and Hidden Folk. Save body mics for named roles and the occasional featured solo line.
Do Young Anna and Young Elsa need their own mics?
Yes, in most productions. They carry the opening scenes and sing solo lines, and young voices are quiet. 3 mm hairline mics are small and light enough for elementary and middle-school performers.
Can we rent mics just for our show week?
Yes. Stage Gear rentals run Monday to Monday around tech week, arrive tested with return labels, and school purchase orders are welcome.
