Wireless Mics and Projection for Disney's High School Musical JR.
Show guide · JR. · 12 principals plus a large Wildcat chorus · Reviewed by Stage Gear staff, October 2026
Short answer: plan on 14 channels. 12 body mics for Troy, Gabriella, the Evans twins, their friends, the two teachers and Jack Scott, plus 2 spares. Cover the chorus with 3–4 area mics at the stage edge.
Stage Gear supplies wireless mics, rentals and projection to school and community theatres across the U.S. Our staff work in theatre; this guide is how we'd mic Disney's High School Musical JR.
Who gets a mic
We counted roles that sing solos or carry lines over music: Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, Ryan, Kelsi, Chad, Taylor, Zeke, Martha, Ms. Darbus, Coach Bolton and Jack Scott. That is 12 body mics plus 2 spares, for 14 channels.
Borderline: Jack Scott's announcements. If he speaks from a fixed booth or the side of the stage, a wired or handheld mic on a stand can replace his body mic. MTI notes Ms. Tenny and the Moderator can be double cast, so one actor playing both needs only one pack. The Drum Major and the audition hopefuls (Cathy, Cyndra, James, Susan) have short moments that a spare body mic or a handheld at the audition piano can cover.
Bigger budget: add packs for Ms. Tenny/Moderator and two audition hopefuls, for about 17 channels. On a 12-channel system, move Jack Scott to a wired mic and Zeke to an area mic, and keep both spares.

The ensemble
Jocks, cheerleaders, Brainiacs, Thespians, Party Kids and Rebels sing as groups, and MTI asks for strong group singers in every ensemble. Cover them with 3–4 area or choir mics along the stage edge and bring the big numbers, "Stick to the Status Quo" and "We're All in This Together," downstage. When an ensemble student gets a solo confession in "Stick to the Status Quo," hand them a spare body mic or a handheld if it's more than a line.
Show notes from our team
- Basketball on stage. "Get'cha Head in the Game" means dribbling and jumping. Belt every pack, tape headsets at the cheek, and use a sound cue or soft practice balls so real bouncing doesn't swamp the mics.
- The auditions. In the audition sequence, Sharpay and Ryan, Kelsi at the piano, and Troy and Gabriella trade the stage quickly. Pre-build mixer scenes so the right pair is up and everyone else is muted.
- Cafeteria solos. "Stick to the Status Quo" stacks short solo lines from many students over a big group. Rehearse the mic cues with the cast and keep a spare or handheld ready for any ensemble soloist.
- Megamix bows. The bows megamix brings everyone back at once. Leave principal mics up but pull them back a little, raise the area mics, and let the full cast carry the finale.
Projection
High School Musical JR. moves through East High's hallways, the gym, the chemistry classroom, the auditorium stage and the karaoke party flashback, so projected scenery handles those quick location changes without extra flats. Most school auditoriums need 7,000–10,000 lumens with the right lens; smaller black boxes need less.
Our sister company Broadway Media makes Scenic Projections for Disney's High School Musical JR. Not sure which projector? Read Stage Projectors for Digital Scenery.

Common questions
- How many wireless mics does High School Musical JR. need?
- Plan on 14 channels: body mics for Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, Ryan, Kelsi, Chad, Taylor, Zeke, Martha, Ms. Darbus, Coach Bolton and Jack Scott, plus 2 spares. On 12 channels, put Jack Scott on a wired mic and Zeke on an area mic.
- Does the whole Wildcat chorus need mics?
- No. Jocks, Brainiacs and Thespians sing as groups, so 3–4 area or choir mics at the stage edge cover them. Give a spare body mic to any ensemble student with a solo line in "Stick to the Status Quo."
- What mic works best for the basketball players?
- Headsets. Troy, Chad and Zeke jump, pivot and dribble, and a headset stays in place better than a hairline element. Belt the packs at the small of the back and check every mic right after "Get'cha Head in the Game."
- Can we rent mics just for our show week?
- Yes. Stage Gear rentals run Monday to Monday around tech week, so you have mics for rehearsals and every performance. Systems arrive tested with return labels, and school purchase orders are welcome.
