Show guide · Full-length · 7 leads, featured roles, big ensemble · Reviewed by Stage Gear staff, October 2026
Short answer: plan on 14 channels. 12 body mics for the seven leads, the three Greek Chorus leads, Kyle and Enid, plus 2 spares. Cover the ensemble with 2–3 area mics at the stage edge.
Stage Gear supplies wireless mics, rentals and projection to school and community theatres across the U.S. Our staff work in theatre; this guide is how we'd mic Legally Blonde The Musical.

Who gets a mic
We counted roles that sing solos or carry dialogue over music: Elle, Emmett, Warner, Vivienne, Paulette, Professor Callahan and Brooke, plus Margot, Serena and Pilar, who lead the Greek Chorus, Kyle and Enid. That is 12 body mics plus 2 spares, for 14 channels.
Borderline: Kate, Chutney, Nikos, Carlos, the Judge, Elle's parents, Grandmaster Chad and Dewey. Each has a short scene or a few lines in a number, so a spare body mic, an area mic or a careful hand-off usually covers them. If two of these roles never share the stage, they can share a pack, but check your blocking first; we haven't paired any here. If you use real dogs for Bruiser and Rufus, they need no mics.
Bigger budget: add packs for Kate, Chutney, Nikos and Elle's parents, for about 18 channels. Coordinate frequencies with us before you go past 16.

The ensemble
The Delta Nus, Harvard students, salon clients and inmates fill several big song-and-dance numbers. Cover them with 3–4 area or choir mics along the stage edge, and stage group singing downstage when you can. When an ensemble member has a featured line, such as a Delta Nu or Harvard student solo, move a spare body mic to that performer instead of adding a channel.
Show notes from our team
- "Whipped into Shape". Brooke sings while jumping rope with the ensemble. Use a headset, a snug mic belt and a sweat cover on the element, keep a spare ready, and ride her channel against heavy breathing.
- Elle's costume changes. Elle changes clothes constantly. Put her pack in a belt that works under every outfit, route the cable away from zippers, and rehearse each quick change with the pack on.
- The Greek Chorus pops up anywhere. Margot, Serena and Pilar appear in Elle's imagination throughout Harvard, often from unexpected spots. Mark every entrance in the script so their mics are open wherever they show up.
- Courtroom scenes. "There! Right There!" and the trial put many principals in fast back-and-forth over music. Program mixer scenes page by page so only the people speaking are open.
Projection
Legally Blonde jumps from the Delta Nu house to Harvard, the salon, a law office and the courtroom, and those quick location changes suit projected scenery. Most school auditoriums need 7,000–10,000 lumens with the right lens; smaller black boxes need less.

Common questions
- How many wireless mics does Legally Blonde need?
- Plan on 14 channels: body mics for Elle, Emmett, Warner, Vivienne, Paulette, Callahan, Brooke, Margot, Serena, Pilar, Kyle and Enid, plus 2 spares. Add packs for Kate, Chutney or Nikos if your budget allows.
- How do we mic the Delta Nus and the ensemble?
- Give the three Greek Chorus leads body mics, then cover the rest of the Delta Nus and ensemble with 3–4 area or choir mics along the stage edge. Move a spare body mic to anyone with a featured line.
- What mic works for Brooke in "Whipped into Shape"?
- A headset. Brooke sings while jumping rope, so she needs a mic that stays at a fixed distance from her mouth. Add a sweat cover, a snug belt for the pack and a spare headset ready to swap.
- Can we rent mics just for our show week?
- Yes. Stage Gear rentals run Monday to Monday around tech week, so you have mics for rehearsals and every performance. Systems arrive tested with return labels, and school purchase orders are welcome.
