Wireless Mics and Projection for Cameron Mackintosh and Disney's Mary Poppins

Show guide · Full-length · 14 principals plus sweeps and a large chorus · Reviewed by Stage Gear staff, October 2026

Short answer: plan on 16 channels. 14 body mics for the principals plus 2 spares, with Katie Nanna and Miss Andrew sharing a pack across intermission. Cover the sweeps and chorus with 3–4 area mics at the stage edge.

Stage Gear supplies wireless mics, rentals and projection to school and community theatres across the U.S. Our staff work in theatre; this guide is how we'd mic Cameron Mackintosh and Disney's Mary Poppins.

Who gets a mic

We counted every role that sings a solo or carries dialogue over music: Mary, Bert, George and Winifred Banks, Jane, Michael, Mrs. Brill, Robertson Ay (who has a "Spoonful" solo), the Bird Woman, Mrs. Corry, Miss Andrew, Neleus, the Park Keeper, and Admiral Boom, whom MTI lets double as the Bank Chairman. That is 14 body mics plus 2 spares, for 16 channels.

Katie Nanna leaves in the opening scenes and Miss Andrew arrives in Act 2, so they can share one channel. Give each performer their own mic element and move only the bodypack at intermission; Stage Gear's Bodymics plug into the packs you already own, which makes this kind of swap simple. Borderline roles: Miss Lark, the Policeman, Von Hussler, Northbrook and Miss Smythe have short scenes that area mics usually cover if staged downstage.

Bigger budget: add channels for John Northbrook, Von Hussler, Miss Lark and the Policeman, and give Katie Nanna her own pack. That brings you to about 21 channels; talk to us before you go past 16 so frequencies are coordinated.

The ensemble

Mary Poppins has big company numbers ("Jolly Holiday", "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", "Step in Time" and "Let's Go Fly a Kite"), so place 3–4 area or choir mics along the stage edge. Keep them low and angled up during "Step in Time" so taps do not overpower the singing. Give a featured sweep a body mic only when they sing solo lines over the band.

Show notes from our team

  • Flying Mary. If Mary flies, place her pack where no harness strap or flying hardware crosses it, often high on the back. Your flying company must approve the placement; rehearse every flight with the mic on.
  • "Step in Time" taps. Bert and the sweeps dance hard. Use snug mic belts, sweat covers and fresh tape, tape Bert's element firmly under the cap, and keep area mics low to stop tap noise swamping the vocals.
  • Hats on and off. Mary, Bert, George and many others change hats. Tape elements to hair or skin, never the hat, and check after each costume change that the mic is still in place.
  • Sharing a pack at intermission. For Katie Nanna and Miss Andrew, each performer keeps a personal mic element. At intermission, move only the pack, plug in the new element, and run a quick sound check.

Projection

Mary Poppins moves through Cherry Tree Lane, the Banks house, the park for "Jolly Holiday", the bank, the rooftops for "Step in Time" and a starry sky, which suits projected scenery and the show's magical transformations. Most school auditoriums need 7,000–10,000 lumens with the right lens; smaller black boxes need less.

Common questions

How many wireless mics does Mary Poppins need?
Plan on about 16 channels: 14 body mics for Mary, Bert, the Banks family, Mrs. Brill, Robertson Ay, the Bird Woman, Mrs. Corry, Miss Andrew and the other speaking principals, plus 2 spares. Katie Nanna and Miss Andrew can share a pack across intermission.
How do we mic the chimney sweeps and chorus?
Use 3–4 area or choir mics along the stage edge for "Jolly Holiday", "Supercal" and "Step in Time". Keep them low during tap sections, and give a sweep a body mic only if they sing solo lines over the band.
Where does Mary's mic pack go if she flies?
Put the pack where no harness strap or flying hardware crosses it, often high on the back. Your flying company must approve the placement, and every flight should be rehearsed with the mic on.
Can we rent mics just for our show week?
Yes. Stage Gear rentals run Monday to Monday around tech week, so you have mics for rehearsals and every performance. Systems arrive tested with return labels, and school purchase orders are welcome.
