Wireless Mics and Projection for Cameron Mackintosh and Disney's Mary Poppins JR.
Show guide · JR. · 13 principals plus a flexible ensemble · Reviewed by Stage Gear staff, October 2026
Short answer: plan on 15 channels. 13 body mics for the principals plus 2 spares, with Katie Nanna and Miss Andrew sharing one pack. Cover the sweeps and ensemble with 2–3 area mics at the stage edge.
Stage Gear supplies wireless mics, rentals and projection to school and community theatres across the U.S. Our staff work in theatre; this guide is how we'd mic Cameron Mackintosh and Disney's Mary Poppins JR.
Who gets a mic
We counted every role that sings a solo or carries dialogue over music: Mary, Bert, Jane, Michael, George and Winifred Banks, Mrs. Brill, Robertson Ay, the Bird Woman, Mrs. Corry, Neleus and the Chairman, plus one channel shared by Katie Nanna and Miss Andrew. That is 13 body mics plus 2 spares, for 15 channels, a realistic size for a middle school production.
Katie Nanna leaves early and Miss Andrew arrives late, so they can share a pack. Give each performer their own mic element and have a crew member move the pack backstage between their scenes; Stage Gear's Bodymics plug into the packs you already own, which keeps that swap quick. Borderline roles: John Northbrook (a solid singer in MTI's notes), Von Hussler, Miss Smythe, the Policeman and the Messenger have short scenes that area mics usually cover if staged downstage.
Bigger budget: give Katie Nanna her own pack and add Northbrook, Von Hussler and one featured sweep. That lands around 19 channels; talk to us before you go past 16 so frequencies are coordinated.
Mic plot
| Ch | Role | Mic | Why |

| Channel 2 | Bert | Hairline, brown | Narrator who dances; tape under the cap. |
| Channel 3 | Jane Banks | Hairline (3 mm), brown | Young strong singer; small element hides in hair. |
| Channel 4 | Michael Banks | Hairline (3 mm), brown | Youngest-looking principal; small head, lots of singing. |
| Channel 5 | George Banks | Hairline, brown | Speak-sings his numbers; bowler hat on and off. |

| Channel 7 | Mrs. Brill | Hairline, beige | Comic lines over music; hide under the cap. |
| Channel 8 | Robertson Ay | Hairline, brown | Physical comedy; tape firmly for pratfalls. |
| Channel 9 | Bird Woman | Hairline, beige | Sings "Feed the Birds"; hide under shawl or hat. |
| Channel 10 | Mrs. Corry | Hairline, black | Leads "Supercal"; mount in the wig. |
| Channel 11 | Neleus | Earset, beige | Statue makeup stops hairline tape from holding. |

| Channel 14 | Spare | Hairline (3 mm), brown | Hot spare for Jane, Michael or any young performer. |
| Channel 15 | Spare | Hairline, beige | Hot spare for any older principal; pre-tested. |

The ensemble
Mary Poppins JR. leans on group numbers like "Jolly Holiday", "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", "Step in Time" and "Let's Go Fly a Kite", so place 2–3 area or choir mics along the stage edge. Young voices are light, so keep the band under the singers and coach the ensemble to sing out toward the front. Give a featured sweep a body mic only when they sing solo lines over music.
Show notes from our team
- If Mary flies. Some productions fly Mary. Place her pack where no harness strap or hardware crosses it, often high on the back, get your flying company's approval, and rehearse every flight with the mic on.
- One act, no intermission. The shared Katie Nanna/Miss Andrew pack must move mid-show. Assign one crew member, label both elements, and write the swap into the running sheet with a quick backstage check.
- Small heads, busy hats. Many middle schoolers suit 3 mm hairline mics. Tape elements to hair or skin, never hats, and check mics after each costume change.
- "Step in Time". Bert and the sweeps dance hard in a short show. Use snug mic belts and sweat covers, and keep area mics low so stomps and taps do not swamp the singing.
Projection
Mary Poppins JR. moves through Cherry Tree Lane, the Banks house, the park for "Jolly Holiday", the bank, the rooftops for "Step in Time" and a starry sky, and projected scenery keeps those changes fast in a 60-minute show. Most school auditoriums need 7,000–10,000 lumens with the right lens; smaller black boxes need less.

- How do we mic the ensemble in Mary Poppins JR.?
