Who gets a mic

Seussical is nearly sung-through, so most named roles need a mic. We counted the Cat in the Hat, Horton, Jojo, Gertrude, Mayzie, the Sour Kangaroo, Mr. and Mrs. Mayor and General Schmitz, plus the three Bird Girls, who sing backup on many of the big numbers. That is 12 body mics plus 2 spares, for 14 channels.

Borderline: the Wickersham Brothers and Yertle the Turtle. The Wickershams work as a tight group, so stage them downstage near the area mics or hand a spare to the one with the most lines. Yertle has a short scene at the trial that a spare covers. On a tighter budget, put the Bird Girls on one area mic, but they will be harder to hear over the band.

Bigger budget: add the three Wickersham Brothers and Yertle for 18 channels. Coordinate frequencies with us before you go past 16.

The ensemble

The Jungle Creatures and the Whos sing in almost every number. Cover them with 3–4 area or choir mics along the stage edge and stage the big group sections of "Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!" and the Act One finale downstage. When a featured Who or Jungle Creature has a solo line, pass them a spare body mic for that scene instead of adding a channel.

Show notes from our team

  • A Cat on the loose. The Cat often runs through the audience. Walk the house with a pack at tech to find dropouts, and keep the Cat's channel out of the house speakers' path to avoid feedback.
  • Horton up the tree. Horton spends a long stretch sitting on the egg, often on a raised platform. Check antenna line of sight to the platform and keep the pack where sitting will not crush the connector.
  • Nearly sung-through. With music under almost every scene, several mics are open at once. Write a cue sheet that turns each principal on just before their line and off when they leave.
  • The tiny Whos. Whoville is on a speck of dust. Some productions add a little reverb or pitch effect when the Whos call out from the clover; decide at tech and keep it subtle.

Projection

The Jungle of Nool, Whoville, the clover field, the circus and the sea voyage all suit projected scenery, and projection keeps the many quick location changes simple. Most school auditoriums need 7,000–10,000 lumens with the right lens; smaller black boxes need less.

Our sister company Broadway Media makes Scenic Projections for Seussical. Not sure which projector? Read Stage Projectors for Digital Scenery.

Common questions

How many wireless mics does Seussical need?
Plan on 14 channels: 12 body mics for the Cat, Horton, Jojo, Gertrude, Mayzie, the Sour Kangaroo, Mr. and Mrs. Mayor, General Schmitz and the three Bird Girls, plus 2 spares. Area mics cover the Jungle Creatures and Whos.
Do the Wickersham Brothers and the Whos need mics in Seussical?
Usually area mics are enough. Put 3–4 choir mics along the stage edge and stage group sections downstage. Hand a spare body mic to a Wickersham or Who who has a solo line in a scene.
How do we mic the Cat in the Hat in Seussical?
Use a headset. The Cat takes the hat on and off and does a lot of physical comedy, so a hairline under the hat can shift. If the Cat goes into the audience, walk the house at tech to check for dropouts and feedback.
Can we rent mics just for our show week?
Yes. Stage Gear rentals run Monday to Monday around tech week, so you have mics for rehearsals and every performance. Systems arrive tested with return labels, and school purchase orders are welcome.
