Who gets a mic

We counted every role that sings a solo or carries dialogue over music: Ariel, Prince Eric, King Triton, Sebastian, Flounder, Scuttle, Ursula, Flotsam, Jetsam, Grimsby and Chef Louis. We added the Pilot, who sings lines in "Fathoms Below," and two featured Mersisters for the solo lines in "Daughters of Triton" and "She's in Love." That is 14 packs plus 2 spares, for 16 channels.

Borderline: the Pilot is mostly heard in the opening, so he can share a pack with Chef Louis if your Pilot has no lines in the later ship scenes; check your script. Grimsby sings little but talks over underscoring all night, so keep him on his own pack. Flotsam and Jetsam trade lines quickly in "Sweet Child," so they need separate channels.

Bigger budget (20 channels): mic all six Mersisters so every solo line in "Daughters of Triton" sits on top of the orchestra, and skip the Pilot share altogether.

The ensemble

Sea creatures, gulls, sailors, chefs, maids and princesses sing as groups, so cover them with three area or choir mics along the stage edge. Give an ensemble member a body channel only when a featured line has to cut through, such as a lead Gull in "Positoovity" or a featured soloist in "Under the Sea." Pull the area mics down during principal dialogue so scenes do not sound hollow.

Show notes from our team

  • Flying and aerial effects. The licensed version uses aerial rigs for swimming and Ariel's rise to the surface. Keep packs and cables away from harness pick points, and rehearse every flight with the mic on.
  • Ariel loses her voice. After the deal with Ursula, Ariel has no spoken lines until her voice returns. Keep her pack on, mute her in silent scenes, and mark exactly which cues reopen her mic.
  • "Under the Sea" and "Les Poissons". Sebastian leads a stage full of dancing sea creatures, then Chef Louis chases him around the kitchen. Double-tape both mics and pull ensemble area mics down whenever Sebastian has a line.
  • Ursula takes the voice. The moment Ursula captures Ariel's voice is usually a sound cue layered with Ursula's live mic. Build it as one mixer scene so reverb, effect and both mics fire together, and rehearse it early.

Projection

Atlantica, Ariel's grotto, the open sea, Eric's ship in the storm, the palace and Ursula's lair all suit projected scenery, and projection makes the shift between under the sea and the world above far easier than flown scenery. Most school auditoriums need 7,000–10,000 lumens with the right lens; smaller black boxes need less.

Common questions

How many wireless mics does The Little Mermaid need?
Plan on 16 channels: 14 body mics for the principals, the Pilot and two featured Mersisters, plus 2 spares. Tight budgets can drop to 13 by sharing the Pilot's pack with Chef Louis and covering the Mersisters with area mics.
How do we mic the Mersisters and sea creature chorus?
Use three area or choir mics along the stage edge for group singing. If budget allows, give the Mersisters with solo lines in "Daughters of Triton" and "She's in Love" their own body mics so those lines carry.
Can Ariel wear a wireless mic while flying?
Yes. Place the pack where the harness will not press on it, often in a pouch at the lower back or thigh, and route the cable away from pick points. Rehearse each flight with the mic live during tech.
Can we rent mics just for our show week?
Yes. Stage Gear rentals run Monday to Monday around tech week, so you have mics for rehearsals and every performance. Systems arrive tested with return labels, and school purchase orders are welcome.
